Maresa von Stockert

Born and raised in Germany, von Stockert first moved to the UK in 1992 to study at TrinityLaban, London. Encouraged by Bessie Schönberg at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, she later continued her studies at Sarah Lawrence College (SLC), New York, USA, under the direction of Viola Farber and John Jaspers. She graduated from SLC with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1996.  She returned to London in 1999 where she founded the contemporary dance company Tilted Productions.

Von Stockert has received multiple awards and nominations including a « Time Out Live Award » for Outstanding Choreography; a « Jerwood Choreography Award », and a « UK New Choreography Award » by the Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund. Tilted Productions was nominated for the « Critics Circle UK National Dance Award » shortlist in the category « Best Independent Company » together with the companies of Akram Khan and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

Professor David Steele wrote an article about von Stockert’s work for the internationally published book « Fifty Contemporary Choreographers » released in December 2020 by Routledge (other artists featured in the book include : Jérôme Bel, Philippe Decouflé, William Forsythe, Dimitris Papaioannou, Alain Platel and Meg Stuart).

Von Stockert has been Choreographer in Residence at the Southbank, London, and Associate Artist at, amongst others, The Place, London; DanceDigital, Chelmsford; DanceEast, Ipswich; and Crying Out Loud, London.

Working and touring nationally and internationally, she has created a large body of works for the stage, site-responsive pieces including gallery works, films and site-responsive outdoor productions, both for her company as well as for repertory companies.

Under her direction, Tilted Productions was a UK National Portfolio Organisation from 2012 – 2018. The company has received long-term funding from Arts Council England, Ipswich Borough Council and support from the European networks ZEPA, PASS, IN SITU, and the UK’s Without Walls Consortium.

In 2018/19 von Stockert received funding from Arts Council England to undertake an extensive research period evolving her work to include films and installations. She subsequently worked on several series of short films (2019-21) that inspired her current work current work. 

Since 2012 von Stockert creates her works internationally with the support of artistic residences and co-commissions. She has recently moved her personal and professional live from the UK to France. In July 2022 she was appointed artistic director of Experiment 49.
